How long have you been a freelance copywriter?
I launched Choice Words in 2018 – so this is my third year!
Who do you work with?
I work with digital agencies, creatives, communication gurus, entrepreneurs, small businesses, start-ups, and b2b companies.
My clients come from a variety of industries, but they all value people and put them at the heart of what they do.
What has been the career path that led you to where you are now?
I started my career with an Honours Degree in Business Studies from Southampton, UK and went on to work in HR writing policies, procedures, and training manuals. After emigrating to New Zealand, I had several project roles that not only utilised these skills but also introduced me to sales copywriting and external comms.
After my youngest son started school, I studied for a Diploma in Copywriting. This was all-encompassing and taught me plenty of tips and tricks. This is when Choice Words was born!
Where are you based?
I’m based in Karori, Wellington and meet face-to-face with clients in the Wellington Region. I also have clients in Auckland, Christchurch and throughout New Zealand.
Do you work on an hourly rate?
I prefer to work on a project basis and charge a fixed fee to cover my services from start to finish. However, I can charge an hourly rate for ongoing work if preferable.
How many clients do you work with at once?
At the most, I’ll have four projects running at the same time. Some of these are larger projects like websites, but others are blogs or marketing emails that can be turned around much quicker. I always work to my client’s deadlines and keep communication flowing throughout the project.
What do you enjoy the most about copywriting?
I love getting to know people, their businesses and why they do what they do.
Copywriting is so much more than grammar and spelling. It involves asking questions, researching, listening, creative thinking and helping people sell!
Why do you freelance?
As a freelance copywriter, no two days are the same – that’s why I love it! I get to work with so many different people and learn about so many cool things. But most of all, freelancing gives me the flexibility to set my own hours and work around the needs of my family.
